In response your comment regarding it is possible for kids growing up now to have a good life without social media, I totally agree with you! I definitely do NOT think that these technologies are ‘natural’ and they are certainly not necessary for one to be a happy human being. That being said, connection with others IS something hardwired in us to truly thrive, and with the growth of technology it is becoming easier and more convenient to fulfill this need for social connection through social media. As I’ve stated, I don’t think these systems are ideal yet (one of the reasons I’m excited to be working on these problems), but we can certainly take control of how these systems influence us.
